Shed structure at Pier Kornel site officially opens in Aalst
(27.06.2024) The former Tupperware site in Aalst is home to an industrial remnant characterised by its shell-shaped shed roofs. Recently, this piece of heritage was restored and brought back to life by B-juxta. On Thursday 27 June, the project was officially inaugurated and handed over to the city of Aalst by developers Revive and Matexi.
The shed structure is located within the Pier Kornel residential project, a 4 ha site that is currently being converted into a new city neighbourhood with 450 new houses and flats. The shed structure used to function as a workshop and warehouse and is one of the most eye-catching industrial remnants on this plot.
Due to severe structural damage to the sheds, we added a new slender steel framework to the inside of the existing concrete structure. This works with the already existing construction in both a structural and architectural way.
Furthermore, we preserved the existing structural elements to the maximum. However, we opened up the concrete trusses in certain places to let in light and to emphasise the construction. We filled them with a transparent material, which protects the inside of the concrete frame from exposure to the weather. At the same time, diffused light comes in.
Finally, drainage was optimised and the shells were given an even grey finish. The sheds were given sleek functional and architectural lighting. The result is a clean and slender unit that honours the specific design of this industrial structure. It can now enter the future as a public, multipurpose place.
Updates on this project and photos of the finished result can be found on this page soon.
